Learning activities

This is a lab-based course. Practical skills will be practiced and evaluated in-person using models, cadavers and biological samples.

Course description
This is a lab-based course where students practice and are evaluated on veterinary laboratory skills, such as cross-matching blood, urinalysis and microbiology.
Course content

Transfusion medicine:

  • cross-matching
  • blood-typing
  • coagulation tests

Urinalysis:

  • urine sample handling techniques
  • urine specific gravity
  • biochemical analysis
  • sediment examination

Microbiology:

  • sample collection
  • culture media use
  • staining techniques

Cytology:

  • sample collection and preparation
  • sample evaluation
Learning outcomes

Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able to:

  • demonstrate laboratory essential skills as designated by the Canadian Veterinary Medical Association;
  • perform veterinary cross-matching and blood-typing procedures;
  • safely handle and prepare urine samples for analysis;
  • perform a complete urinalysis;
  • collect from, prepare and evaluate samples for cytology, from common areas such as ear, vagina and skin;
  • culture microorganisms using standard culture media;
  • stain microorganisms using standard stains such as gram stain and diff quick.
Means of assessment

Assessment will be in accordance with the ÌÇÐÄvlog´«Ã½Evaluation Policy. The instructor will present a written course outline listing specific evaluation criteria at the beginning of the semester. 

In order to achieve a grade of C (or higher) in the course, students must:

  • demonstrate competency (a performance of 60% or higher) in an evaluation of each of the assigned essential skills
  • attend a minimum of 80% of the scheduled hours in lab

Evaluation will be based on:

Practical evaluations: 60-80% (no single evaluation worth more than 20%)

Attendance and participation: 20-40%

Total: 100%

Prerequisites

VTEC 1312

Students in the Veterinary Technology program are required to maintain a minimum grade of C in all courses in order to progress in the program.
