Active threat

An active threat is a rapidly developing situation where one or more individuals use deadly force, such as firearms, knives, or vehicles. It typically involves someone posing an immediate danger to others by displaying a weapon, making threats, or showing clear intent to inflict harm or carry out an act of violence.

GET OUT

  • If possible, exit the building as fast as you can
  • Tell others to leave the building
  • If safe to do so, help others to escape with you
  • When safe, call 9-1-1 

 HIDE, if unable to get out   

  • Immediately lock and barricade all doors
  • If safe to do so, close and lock windows, close blinds/cover windows
  • Turn off lights and audio equipment
  • Move away from doors and windows and stay low
  • Silence your cell phone, including vibrate mode, or turn it off
  • Stay quiet and try to remain calm
  • Prepare for possible confrontation
  • Stay in your secure place until advised by Police/College Authorities that it is safe to leave

DEFEND

Fight for your life. Only as a last resort. Consider items around you as weapons of opportunity to fight with. 

  • Scream, scatter, throw items at the intruder to create chaos
  • Work with the people around you to overpower the intruder
  • Use improvised weapons, like scissors, furniture, fire extinguishers, and keys

If you come across a suspicious individual, note a detailed description and make a report to security.
